Around and Ontop of Dubrovnik

On our first full day in Dubrovnik we walked around the city on our own and did a walking tour.  Dubrovnik is a walled city so if you look in the first picture you can see people walking on the wall that goes around it. It is about a 1.2 mile walk around the walls.  It is also a popular filming site for Games of Thrones.


Below is a picture of Onofrio's Fountain. It is a sixteen-sided container with a small dome.  It was one of the ending points of the aqueduct system. Each of the sixteen sides has a unique stone-carved masked face. The fountain was also partly damaged by the earthquake in 1667.

The bell tower is 102 feet tall and was built in 1444. It is one of the symbols of the free city state of Ragusa. It was rebuilt in 1929 as it had lost its stability through an earthquake and was in danger of falling. The brass face of the clock shows the phases of the moon. Two human figures strike the bell every hour.

Birthday in Dubrovnik

On my birthday we headed to our last destination Dubrovnik.To get there you actually drive thru Serbia for about 10 minutes and go thru Customs twice. It is a beautiful drive along the Dalmatian Coast.  It is a walled city.

We drove straight to the hotel to drop our stuff off and then drove over to drop our car off. When we got there the office was closed and while I was not using my phone I was able to turn it on and call the number listed to see when it was going to open again. The guy said that he was at the airport but would be back soon. So we walked up and got some lunch. When we got back he was getting ready to leave and so we asked him how much it was for a cab.  He offered to drive us for half the price and so when he was driving us he offered to drive us to the airport for cheaper than a cab would. So we took advantage of his shady side cab business when we left. 

Our hotel was right on the water and was built into the side of the cliff. While it was a great location I hated our room, even the free bottle of champagne that we got to Mr & Mrs Ivory for our honeymoon, was not enough for me to love it.  I did not book us a sea view room and regretted it so when we checked in I tried to upgrade it but they were sold out so we were stuck with a room that seemed like it was in a cave with no natural light.

The concierge said we needed reservations at all of the restaurants but we ventured out and stumbled across one of the recommended ones and it was empty. So no reservations needed!

They have something around 100 Olympic medalists from Split. So along one of the walkways by the water they have tiles for each athlete.

We went to this restaurant that has no roof but it looks like they have slats that come down to enclose it (look over Chris' head).

On our last day in Split we planned to go to Joe's Beach but when we got to the boat it was there but no one else so we took the opportunity go up the bell tower in Split. There were beautiful views and Asian tourists who had to stop on all of the steps to take pictures but it was worth it. 

Plan That Goes Awry Ends At Zen

On our last full day in Split we planned on going to Joe's Beach again. When we got there the boat was just sitting there and there was no sign up so we went to the Bell Tower. When we got back there were people there and they said that the boat was no longer running because it was October 1st, the season ends September 30th and they are clearly strict on that.  So we went back to the hotel and asked her where to go. She told us so we walked down to the center and got a cab.  He dropped us off at the wrong beach but we did not realize that until we were walking around looking for Zen beach.  Where he dropped us off wasn't really a beach but just some cement that people would put towels down on and just jump into the water.  So we stopped and had a beer and looked out at the boats and then walked up until we found a cab.  We then got dropped off at the right beach but had to look for the Zen beach club. It was a little fancy but nice because they had chairs you could rent and it was not crowded.  It had a little bit of a night club feel.

Last Stop on the Boat Tour - Hvar

Our last stop on the boat tour was the Island of Hvar.  There was a fortress that we walked up to and while it was a long walk it was worth it for the awesome views.
